My photo blog.

I get criticized for not taking pictures of people. Just things. Most people are not that interesting. The one thing I could never tire of taking pictures of (my wife) isn’t interested in having her picture taken all that often let alone posted for all to see.

I will post some of my own favorite pics and maybe someone might find them interesting or tasteful or horrible. I am open to all comments.

To my christian followers out there try to restrain yourselves from using some of these pics to prove the existence of a deity. :)

FW: JOKE (this is really funny)

with 10 comments

I HATE these emails. I am not sure why people still send these things to me. I hate them. They are usually not funny. Wait. They are never funny, let alone THAT funny.

“FW:” is basically friendly SPAM as far as I am concerned. Sometimes it is hidden, right? “RE: FW:” is the usual tip-off. DELETE.

Only one good thing has ever come from a “FW:” in known history. My wife. That is a different story I will not go into here. Let is be known that that was the last time I “read” an email with “FW:” in the subject line (that was not related to work of course!).

I am not sure how many times anyone needs to read “You know you are (insert ethnicity of choice here) if…” emails. HELLO?

I will say that I do enjoy corresponding with multi-millionaire African Princes and Princesses and other heirs of large forutnes. Sometimes they are in the UK (more believable location). They are really fun to talk to. I strongly suggest doing that. I mean, they seem like nice people and have some extra cash to give away…

I am considering a new venture in Africa: Estate Planning & Asset Protection. It seems there is a real need that has not been met there. It is rather strange to me though as the figures quoted don’t much correspond with the images on TV, documentaries, news reports, etc… I think the media may have it all wrong. Anyone else want to join me in this venture? There seems to be much work to do and why not me?

You have the Last Word…

Starbucks vs. McCafe

with 5 comments

I like cafe.  I like espresso.  There are many chains here in Los Angeles.  The usual stuff I am sure you all have in your neck of the woods.

Starbucks?  Check.

Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf? Check.

Peet’s Coffee and Tea? Check.

Seattle’s Best (usually inside of a Borders around here)? Check.

Kelly’s? Check.

Rosy’s Bakery and Cuban Cafe? Check.  (Okay, I snuck that one in because…well…you’ll see).

McCafe? Check.

Starbucks, is well, everywhere.  There are 4 within a mile of each other in my little corner of L.A.  I was in San Francisco and they are literally a block away from each other.  Seattle?  Well, that is its home.  In Seattle, like in your own home, there is a Starbucks in the kitchen, the hall closet, the garage, the basement, the bedroom and in the bathroom.  It’s almost like a roommate that won’t leave you alone to entertain your “guest” on those special nights.

Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf serves a much better espresso than Starbucks.  Starbucks tends to be over-roasted.  CB&TL has it pretty good.  Strong and Bold, with just enough of that bitterness but not overwhelming.

Peet’s is just okay.  Take it or leave it, there are better.

Kelly’s?  Skip it for espresso.  Seriously.

Seattle’s Best is probably the best of the “big guys”.  It is the perfect blend of strong, bold, creamy, and bitter.  The perfect blend.  This was my go to place.  It was until the clown showed up.

McD’s is now serving espresso.  Now, I am not totally surprised.  This was going on in Europe for years.  We were in London in 2005.  And there, inside the McDonald’s was a “Cafe”.  It was cool.  It had its own “space” within the “space”.  The espresso’s were well made, but not PERFECT.  I thought, eventually the US McDonald’s will figure this out.  It’s 2009.  What the hell took so long?

RANT: US McD stopped serving FRIED apple pies and switched to BAKED apple pies.  If you are old enough to remember…those USED to be FRIED!  I guess in 2007 the dream came to an end for me.  London no longer sold FRIED apple pies.  Neither did ITALY.  McD’s Europe went CALIFORNIA!  WTF!?!?

Okay, sorry.  I had to vent.

Back to the espresso.

If you have been living under a rock or don’t drive/ride/walk past a McD’s on your way ANYWHERE then you will know that McD’s has introduced Iced Coffees a while ago.  I don’t drink them, but I heard they were pretty good.  Recently, McD’s opened a select few McCafe’s in direct competition with Starbucks (SB).

Starbucks, you have been warned.  My millions of reads will soon flock, run, ride, drive thru, skip from the Green Mermaid to the old trusty Clown.

If you are into the Iced Coffee drinks or Lattes or Vanilla whatevers…Find Your Nearest McCafe Now!  (You will have to search in your area using the almighty one).

There you have it.  Order an espresso.  Order a cappuccino. Order a Latte.  YOU. WILL. NOT. BE. DISAPPOINTED.

Oh yeah, Rosy’s.  Well, Rosy’s serves up the most consistent shots of espresso.  Period.  They use the best cafe in the world.  It’s made by Gavina.  You may know this brand as Don Francisco or La Llave.  There is no better cafe/coffee in the world.  Trust me.  There isn’t.  Stop looking.  Seriously.

I said STOP.

Now, I think, the Clown is using a brand of cafe/coffee I quite like…is it?  Could it possibly be? IS IT?

Taste it for yourself.  You will never visit a mermaid again.

Unless she looks like Daryl Hannah.

What is friendship?

with 72 comments

What does it mean to be a friend?

How do you define friendship?  A friend recently shared his idea about friendship and how it seemed to him (being an outsider in the US); I thought it was brilliant.  He basically, well…let me just copy and paste:

“People in everyone’s life are like train passengers. you sit in your place during your journey while people come in and out the train while they do their journey. Someone sits close to you for a while then they leave, some sit and talk to you, some join your very same journey, and some of them just stare at you.”

I agree with this.

My train’s passenger list changes.  Sometimes life controls it and other times I control it.

I won’t go into it here, but I have removed some from my train myself.  I find that there are people on my train that were not invited and sometimes I am one of those who stares blankly at those who wish to sit in my train.  I prefer the deep conversations and prefer those who prefer to express thoughts, ideas, and feelings.  Sometimes there are disagreements, but rarely is that enough for an expulsion from my train.  Disagreements are healthy and should be be viewed as a learning experience as well as an opportunity to learn a little something about my fellow passenger as well as myself.

I try to control those that get on my train.  Sometimes I can’t.  People just get on.  Some get off by their own accord, the rest are removed.

What is a friend to me?

A friend to me is someone that will listen as well as share.  Friendship, true friendship, is about sharing.  Sometimes religion binds people together, other times its an idea or a cause.  Other times it is hard to pinpoint the commonality that is shared.

I miss traveling.  I can honestly say that I have made friends on my journeys.  I have made friends on actual trains and buses.

There is a friend, whom I keep in touch with, that I met on a bus ride from Standsted Airport to Victoria Station.  We were on the bus for almost an hour without speaking.  Then suddenly, with 15 minutes left on the ride, we started talking…talking about our trips and where we’d been, etc… Maybe 15 minutes? We parted just outside of the train station. We exchanged email addresses and the rest is history.  We have stayed in touch all of these years later from a causal meeting on a bus.  We share our travel stories and our personal stories.  Although we have not seen each other since, we chat on line and share on line… BUT does this make us friends?

I really and honestly don’t have a definition for friendship.  I am hoping those who read this blog will share their concept of friendship with me.

I am curious what friendship means to you?  This of course gives you the Last Word…

Michael Jackson is dead and I don’t care (UPDATED)

with 4 comments

Seriously.

It is beside the point that I couldn’t get where I needed to today because of the traffic on the Los Angeles area freeways.  I just don’t care that Michael Jackson is dead.  There I said it.  I don’t care.

I think people should have taken the position of Elizabeth Taylor, Diana Ross and Justin Timberlake; stay quiet.

It strikes me as ironic and proves (IMHO) how inconsistent the media is.  I remember when the media made the effort to “prove” in the court of public opinion that Michael Jackson was a pedophile.   They  were convincing us over and over again…

Jesus Juice

Children with sheets over their heads

Dangling baby out of hotel windows

Inappropriate sleep overs

Wacko Jacko

The same people who vilified Michael Jackson were celebrating him.  It seemed like that was the only news today.  I think celebrities need to die every day as nothing else matters on the day we celebrate their lives.  Seems like nothing was going on in the world except traffic and a memorial.  I beg to differ.

Did you know that around 204,000 people have fled their homes in the Somali capital of Mogadishu as a result of a militant offensive against government forces?  Yeah, that was today.

U.S. President Barack Obama said that The United States is “absolutely not” giving Israel a green light to attack Iran.  Israel is going to Nuke Iran?  We said, No?  That was today?

How about this bit of scary news…Plainclothes investigators sent to test security at federal buildings in four U.S. cities were successful in smuggling bomb components through guard posts at all 10 of the sites they visited.  Yawp.  Seems kind of important, don’t you?

Indonesians vote for only the second time in their brief history (3rd largest democracy in the world)…

All of this is going on…but nothing seems to be more important than a memorial.  Right?

Seems wrong.  Seems wrong to hear “We are the World” while poor Somalians are fleeing a place they call home.

I couldn’t help but wonder if the “friends” that performed were trying to get a few extra sales…

Mariah Carey – New Album in 48 days

AKON – New Album out in stores

Lionel Richie – New album out in stores

Brooke Shields – Still trying to save her TV career?

John Mayer/Jennifer Hudson – Grammy votes?

I am so cynical, I know.  I just wonder how quickly AEG will be cashing in on the DVD/BLU-RAY of the memorial?

Who do you miss?

Tell me if this sounds familiar.

Years ago I had an acquaintance that worked across the hall from me. He was older than me and we’d pass each other in the hallway and exchange the cordial greeting we all know so well. It turned out we had something in common. We smoked. One day he walks into my office and asks if he could “bum” a smoke from me. I gladly pulled my pack out of my shirt pocket and with index finger on the top of the box, flipped it open and a cigarette sprung out for him to take. He asked me if I wanted money for it. I said no. I then asked if he wanted company while smoking. He said yes and the rest became history.

His name was Domingo Zambrano.

We would go outside of the office area to smoke. Our meetings began to be as common as a cat in an alley. We would be found outside smoking for much longer than out allotted lunch time allowed. Who cared? We were discussing things that mattered and were important.

Isn’t it always like that?

We would talk about the banality of life. We would talk about women. We would talk about travel. We would listen to each other. We would argue with each other. We would laugh. We would even on occasion cry. Through it all we were always honest with each other and our opinions, even though sometimes at odds, never ruined what existed between us.

Our conversations would range from UFO talk to human nature to the afterlife and spirituality to literature.  It was an education for me and an opportunity to Domingo to teach once more.

Domingo was old enough to be my father. He knew the role he played in my life. He understood it better than I. I took the relationship for granted and as is usually the case, it ended. After 9/11 I lost my job across the hall from Domingo. Not right away, but about a month after the attacks on New York I was laid off. He was lucky to have a job after 9/11. We promised to keep in touch and I promised to stop by.

I never stopped by. He never called.

I would occasionally find myself in that building and would look around for him. I would go through the old hallway and peek in his old window. A new person sat in his old place. I checked outside where we used to have our talks. New people had replaced us. Same scenario…Old guy and young guy.

Last time I saw Domingo was about 7 years ago.

The last time I stopped by the old building I ran into someone who knew Domingo.

“Have you seen Domingo? Is he still with the company?”

“No. He left several years ago. I think he moved.”

“To a different company?”

“No, I think he went back to Chile…”

“..oh..”

“…but someone said he had a heart attack and passed away. I am not sure.”

I didn’t know what to say. He was gone? Gone, gone. Not just gone.

*******************

I think of Domingo Zambrano often. I think of him when I see a woman I know he’d like. I think about him when I think of Rome. I think of him when someone mentions Chile and the Chilean wines…I think I miss him.

No more talks about the evolution of man.  No more talks about love.  No more talks about the “whys” in life.  No more talk about luck and work and Rome or dreams about opening book stores in San Bernardo or Sardinia no more talking about planets and solar systems or trees and beaches.  No more talking.  About anything with Domingo.

I miss Domingo Zambrano.

Is it fair to Christians…

Is it fair to Christians to hold them up to scrutiny because of the actions of some of their leaders?  I mean, here are a few shepherds that lead the flock.

Ken Ham (Australian / Head of AiG; Answers in Genesis) discounts science but then wants to “use science” to prove the bible. Huh?  He is teaching children and adults to ask “Were you there?” anytime someone states anything about the earth being any older than 6,000 years old or asks about dinosaurs.  He states that the account in Genesis is factual and represents what truly occurred, without question.  He also believes that we lived in a “Land of the Lost” during the time of Noah and Noah grabbed up a few of the “baby” dinos for the ark.  Seriously.

Ray Comfort, a New Zealander, who teaches that the banana proves god’s existence.  Seriously.

Kent Hovind is serving a ten-year prison sentence in the Federal Correctional Institution in South Carolina, after being convicted of 58 federal counts, including twelve tax offenses, one count of obstructing federal agents and forty-five counts of structuring cash transactions.  Oh yeah, and he has his theory of creation (that is sort of in line with Mr. Ham’s theory above).  There is no other way of telling it:

Hovind explains the Biblical account of Noah as follows: Noah’s family and two of every “kind” of animal (including young dinosaurs) safely boarded the Ark before a minus 300° F (~-184°C) ice meteor came flying toward the earth and broke up in space. Some of the meteor fragments became rings and others caused the impact craters on the moon and some of the planets. The remaining ice fragments fell to the north and south poles of the earth.

Hovind also states that the Grand Canyon was formed in a couple of weeks.  Seriously.

Lee Strobel click it.  Seriously.

Televangelists in general?  I mean do those count as leaders?

Is it fair?

Italy News NOW! FATAL TRAIN EXPLOSION IN VIAREGGIO!(UPDATED)

with 2 comments

ROME — Two gas-filled railway tank cars exploded in the northern Italian city of Viareggio on Tuesday, seriously injuring at least 40 people, firefighters said. There are over 300 firefighters from throughout Tuscany working on the aftermath of this explosion. There are possibly 6 dead at this time.

“Exact figures are not known yet but we can speak of at least 40 seriously injured,” a spokesman said.

The explosion came as the train was approaching the station in the coastal city of 50,000 inhabitants northwest of Pisa shortly after midnight, possibly due to a derailment, the Italian news agency ANSA reported.

Flames engulfed homes on a street alongside the station, prompting evacuation of areas located near the station.

The train of 14 railway cars was travelling from the north to Pisa.

UPDATE as of 29/6/09 11:19pm PST:

The body count has risen to 13 dead in this horrible accident. It has also been confirmed that two buildings have collapsed near the site. There are a total of 14 railway cars and they are being monitored for leaks and possible further explosions. At least 50 are reported injured; some with burns covering 90% of their bodies.

UPDATE as of 29/6/09 11:19pm PST

Thousands have been evacuated from the epicenter of this terrible incident that rocked many out of bed late last night near the Viareggio train station. At this point, it seems clear that the train did indeed derail (as was reported earlier). The count at this time is 50 injured (some with 90% burns to their bodies) and the death toll is holding at 13 but many fear this could be higher. According to Reuters the Italian State railways said in a statement that one carriage derailed, pulling another 4 with it. Liquefied petroleum gas escaped from a tank on one of the carriages and caught fire.

UPDATE as of 29/6/09 11:57pm PST

On a radio interview on RTL 102.5 the Mayor of Viareggio, Luca Lunardini, says that things are under control and that the efforts of the firefighters as well as other first responders helped in controlling the situation. He said the fast response helped calm down the fearful residents in the area. He confirmed that the death toll is holding at 13 at this time, but that many of the survivors are in critical condition and are receiving medical attention at this time. Some of the injured are in stable condition, but fears that some of the survivors that are in critical condition may not survive. He added that along with the two buildings that were destroyed 4 to 5 other buildings sustained serious damage as well.

UPDATE as of 30/6/09 10:44amPST

At this time the death toll is confirmed at 14 as a woman was found in the rubble. Three residents are still missing. Many of those that were taken in with burns have been moved from stable condition to critical; 36 out of 50.

UPDATE as of 1/7/09 9:20amPST

More than a day after a freight train derailed and exploded on the Italian coast, officials raised the death toll to 17, including two small children and an unidentified man who subsequently died of severe burns, news agencies reported. The 14-car train carrying liquefied petroleum gas derailed in Viareggio around midnight on Monday, engulfing a neighborhood in flames. More than 34 people injured, 12 of them in serious condition. The train was traveling south through coastal Tuscany when the axle on the first car broke, officials said. The train ran off the tracks and exploded.

The flames ravaged entire streets, and five buildings collapsed, killing some residents as they slept.

“It was an apocalypse,” a survivor said on Italian television, according to Reuters. “All we could smell was gas and things burning, and all we could see was flames.”

Three children were pulled alive from the rubble, the Italian news media reported.

More than 1,000 people were evacuated, and about 100 were left homeless, the mayor of Viareggio, Luca Lunardini, told news agencies.

Guido Bertolaso, Italy’s senior civil protection official, called the episode one of the “worst tragedies” to occur in the Italian train system, ANSA reported. In 2005, 17 people died in a collision between a passenger and freight train.

Raffaele Gargiulo, a police spokesman for the nearby city of Lucca, told The A.P. that the bodies of the dead were so badly burned that identifications would be difficult.

The regional spokesman for a railway union told ANSA that Tuesday’s accident was the fifth train-related accident in Tuscany this month. Several other trains either derailed or went off their tracks, though there were no reported fatalities or injuries.

Railway unions called for a one-hour halt in train traffic for Wednesday, Reuters reported, out of respect for the dead and to draw attention to the need for higher safety standards

Accusations of poor infrastructure and questions about why dangerous materials were being shipped through residential areas immediately added to the political pressures on Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi. In the usual Italian style Berlusconi was met with boos and cries of “go home” when he arrived in Viareggio on Tuesday afternoon.

At a news conference, Mr. Berlusconi said that the government would soon call a state of emergency, and that it would also “guarantee the reconstruction of 100 percent of the houses destroyed,” Italy’s ANSA news agency reported.

The accident comes a week before the country is expected to host world leaders for the Group of 8 summit meeting, to be held in another disaster zone, L’Aquila. An earthquake there on April 6 killed nearly 300 people and left 65,000 homeless.

UPDATE as of 2/7/09 14:11pmPST

As of this writing the fatalities have risen to 19. The additional deaths came from complications suffered by those who amazingly survived the blast, but later perished.

According to a report filed on Reuters:

An Italian prosecutor investigating the explosion of a freight train which killed 18 people has opened a probe into possible manslaughter and said the buckling of one of the train’s parts may have caused the disaster.

“We cannot say more because the investigation is under way,” prosecutor Aldo Cicala told reporters on Thursday.

He said victims of the accident, which was triggered by the derailment and subsequent explosion of a railcar carrying liquid petroleum gas, were so badly burned that only three of them had been identified beyond doubt.

Transport Minister Altero Matteoli told parliament on Wednesday a defective axle may have caused Italy’s worst rail disaster in years, though the company owning the train carriages said it saw no link between them and the accident.

Matteoli, who visited the site of the incident in the seaside town of Viareggio, said one axle on the derailed railcar, owned by a subsidiary of U.S.-based GATX Corp was rusted.

“The one that I have seen was three-quarters consumed by rust,” he told La Stampa newspaper. “How is it possible that (a few) months after an inspection it was reduced to that condition?

“We need to know whether the inspection was done correctly or if something unexpected occurred,” he said.

GATX said in a statement after the accident that it did not see any connection between its wagons and the cause of the disaster, but it was collecting information.

Trenitalia, the state railway company, said on Thursday it would not use wagons supplied by GATX until the U.S. firm provided details on their components.

The Italian company which checked the railcars in March, Cima, said it had informed GATX that some of the wheels were no longer usable. The American company sent replacements, which Cima fitted.

“The repairs were carried out in full respect of the requests made by the company owning the wagons and of European Union requirements,” Cima said in a statement on Wednesday.

The director of health at Versilia hospital said the death toll from the accident had risen to 18, including 3 children. Some 26 people were injured, many of them seriously.

Italy has suffered several rail accidents in recent years. In 2005, 17 people were killed when a passenger train collided with a freight train near the northern city of Bologna.

ALSO…

(ANSA) – Viareggio, July 2 – The toll from Tuesday’s gas train explosion in the Tuscan town of Viareggio rose to 19 Thursday as a woman died in hospital.

About ten of the burns patients from the disaster are fighting for their lives, hospitals said.

Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi said the government was considering ”changing the rules for the transport of these tanker cars”.

He did not go into specifics, but promised a ”thoroughgoing” investigation into the cause of the disaster.

Italian rail chief Mauro Moretti told parliament that the train derailed when a part, believed to have been a rusty axle, gave way.

He said wagon parts were originally made in the East Germany in 1974 but were passed fit for use in 2004. Moretti denied reports that the axle showed signs of being soldered by rail safety workers.

”I’ve read some amazing things, written by people who are supposed to be experts…There was no soldering, it just gave way,” Moretti said at a Senate hearing.

The derailed railcar was owned by a Vienna-based subsidiary of the US-based GATX Corp.

Moretti said Italian rail would not use GATX wagons until the firm provided information on their components.

GATX said it can see no connection between its wagons and the disaster but it is gathering information.

The Italian company which last checked the railcars, Cima, said it had fitted some replacement wheels from GATX in March.

Moretti rejected rail union claims that less money is being spent on safety and maintenance, noting that Italy had 293 rail accidents in 1993 and only 19 last year.

A leading Italian consumer protection association, Codacons, said it would sue the Italian rail safety agency and was mulling class action against GATX in US courts.

Viareggio prosecutor Aldo Cicala said a probe had been opened into ”possible manslaughter by person or persons unknown”.

He said ”possible buckling’ of a mechanical component’ may have caused the disaster, Italy’s worst since 17 people were killed at Bologna station in 2005.

”We can’t say any more because the investigation is ongoing,” Cicala said.

Five children are among the victims of the blast, which happened after a car carrying liquid gas derailed and a fireball engulfed buildings.

Sixteen of the 19 victims were so badly burned that it was initially possible only to identify three of the bodies. But officials have now managed to identify ten of them.

There is a place where the cafe begins
And before the espumita ends,
And there the coffee beans grow soft and green,
And there the sun burns right, like a dream,
And there the colibri rests from his flight
To cool in the cafe tinged wind.

Let us leave this place where the cafe brews black
And the spoon churned espumita winds and bends.
Past the spot where the sugar canes grow
We shall walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And watch where the chalk-white sugars go
To the place where cafe La Llave pours.

Yes we’ll walk with a walk that is measured and slow,
And we’ll go where the chalk-white sugars go,
For the Cubans, they mark, and the Cubans, they know
The place where cafe La Llave flows.
